A heavy cloud of tension hangs over Limuru following the dramatic and mysterious abduction of Peter Kawanjiru, the Youth Coordinator of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).

The shocking incident occurred on the night of Monday, June 30, triggering public outrage and sparking intense debate over rising political intimidation and human rights violations.

According to viral video footage and eyewitness reports, more than ten unmarked vehicles—mostly Subaru models believed to be linked to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)—stormed Kawanjiru’s residence under the cover of darkness.

A sudden power outage plunged the area into darkness moments before gunshots were heard, sending neighbors into panic and confusion.

Kawanjiru, a vocal ally of impeached former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua, was taken away under unclear circumstances.

Officials now allege he may have been targeted for his suspected role in organizing and financing the June 25 memorial protests that spiraled into chaos.

The protests, held in Kiambu and Nairobi, reportedly led to the destruction of government property, including the burning of the Kikuyu Law Courts and several police stations.

Authorities accuse the young leader of funding acts of vandalism, but opposition figures see a deeper political motive.

The protests themselves turned deadly, with multiple fatalities and over 400 injuries reported—including both demonstrators and police officers—adding to the growing national unrest.

Outraged by the incident, politician Cate Waruguru termed Kawanjiru’s abduction as a blatant abuse of power and a dangerous step toward authoritarianism.

She called for his immediate release and demanded accountability for the operation, warning that such actions erode public trust in law enforcement and threaten democratic freedoms.

As the nation grapples with escalating political tension, the fate of Peter Kawanjiru remains unknown. His disappearance underscores the rising climate of fear, and many are now calling for urgent dialogue to prevent further descent into instability and repression.
