Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s close ally, Wahome Thuku, has sparked heated reactions online after making controversial remarks about the ongoing political unrest in Tanzania following President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s landslide victory.
In a lengthy post shared through this Facebook link, Wahome boldly declared that Tanzanians have only until 6PM to remove what he termed as “the regime” before the window of opportunity closes. He argued that in any uprising meant to unseat a sitting government, there’s only a three-day margin to act, beyond that, the state always reclaims control with force.
The outspoken lawyer went further to suggest that the Kiswahili language itself has weakened the intensity and momentum of protests in Tanzania. He implied that despite their large numbers, Tanzanian demonstrators appear too calm and restrained, a trait he linked to the country’s deep-rooted Swahili culture and communication style.
Wahome’s sentiments have since gone viral, drawing a mix of applause and outrage across East Africa. Some Kenyans online agreed with his blunt analysis, saying Tanzania’s calm political culture has often limited its people’s ability to demand accountability. Others, however, accused him of being disrespectful to Tanzanians and mocking their democratic struggle.
Tensions have remained high in Tanzania since President Suluhu was declared winner with over 31 million votes, a result that opposition figures have strongly disputed. The ruling CCM party also swept 270 out of 272 parliamentary seats, tightening its grip on power and leaving the opposition almost voiceless.
Political observers say Wahome Thuku’s remarks reflect a growing regional debate on youth activism and how different national cultures influence political movements. But his “6PM deadline” statement has stood out as a bold, almost prophetic warning that has left Tanzanian Gen Zs divided on how to proceed.
