President William Ruto has told Kirinyaga leaders that there was an agreement for the Mt Kenya region to support him after they backed former President Uhuru Kenyatta for ten years.
Speaking after a meeting at State House, Ruto said leaders from the region had agreed to support Uhuru for his full two terms, and in return, they would back him for president. He said he kept his promise by supporting Uhuru during his time in office.
“We agreed to support Uhuru for ten years, and you promised to support me after that,” Ruto told the leaders.
The President said the agreement was based on trust and unity between leaders. He urged the region to remain united and continue working with his government.
His remarks come at a time when political opinions in the Mt Kenya region appear divided. Some leaders are supporting the government, while others are taking different political directions.
Ruto’s statement is seen as an effort to remind the region of the earlier agreement and strengthen his support base. The Mt Kenya region is considered important in national politics because of its large number of voters.
The meeting at State House is part of ongoing engagements between the President and leaders from different regions as he seeks to maintain political support and push his development agenda.
