A South African woman has stirred a heated online debate after sharing a glimpse of her lobola negotiation, which was attended only by her parents and her partner’s parents.
The TikTok user, @nkolopk, posted the video on October 7, 2026. It shows the discussions taking place inside a home, with no aunts, uncles or other extended family members present. She captioned the clip: “POV: You had a private lobola with just both your parents!”
Lobola is a traditional marriage custom in which the groom’s family negotiates a bride price with the bride’s family. The payment is usually made before or as part of the marriage process.
The arrangement drew mixed reactions from netizens. Some praised the couple for keeping the talks private, arguing that lobola is a personal family matter. They said the amount paid and other details should not become fodder for wider family conversations.
Others disagreed, saying the decision to leave out extended family could create problems down the line. They argued that relatives are often needed when families come together for important occasions and that their support matters in the long run.
One commenter pointed to larger family gatherings tied to major traditional and family events as a key reason relatives should remain involved in the process.
The video has since attracted wide attention, with the comment section split between those who see private negotiations as a modern and sensible approach and those who believe tradition calls for the involvement of the wider family.
