A tense moment was captured on video during President William Ruto’s visit to Kibera on Friday, May 23, when a woman appeared to pull the Head of State in a surprising encounter that raised security concerns.
The footage, shared widely online shows President Ruto arriving at a packed event in the Kibera slums, where he was warmly received by residents.
As he moved through the crowd alongside his security detail and Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, a woman reached out to greet him.
As the President extended his hand, the woman held on tightly and seemed to pull him, momentarily causing him to lose balance.
A quick-reacting bodyguard intervened, attempting to push the woman away. The President, visibly caught off-guard, steadied himself by holding onto MP Jalang’o’s back.
Despite the unexpected incident, President Ruto maintained his composure, smiled, and invited the woman for a second handshake before his bodyguard gently escorted her back into the crowd.
The event in Kibera was part of Ruto’s ongoing nationwide campaign to promote affordable housing.
During his speech, he reiterated his commitment to transforming Kibera from a sprawling slum into a modern residential area.
He revealed that the Kibera Soweto Affordable Housing Project, which already features 4,600 housing units, will be expanded to include 25,000 new units.
Ruto added that over 11,000 residents already participating in the program would be among the first to benefit from the new homes.
