The wife of Captain Waweru Mwangi has spoken out after allegations that she left the pilot financially stranded and transferred property to her own name as the couple battles through a divorce. In her response, she gave her account of the marriage, the family’s finances, and the long legal fight now unfolding between them.
Mrs Waweru said their story dates back to their university days, when she became pregnant and stayed behind to raise their baby while Waweru went abroad to continue his studies. She said the two later got married, began building their life together, and in 1997 bought a plot in Thindigua after getting land from her mother. According to her, they used the title deed to secure a bank loan and also borrowed from other institutions to develop the property.
She said the marriage went through many financial pressures over the years, but she insisted she carried a large share of the burden as the family expanded. Mrs Waweru said they had five children by the time the bank demanded repayment after a loan default, and that by then she was already supporting the household through difficult times. She also said the family eventually sold their home for KSh 43 million after the HFCK loan had grown to about KSh 40 million.
On the issue of money allegedly transferred to her account, Mrs Waweru said her husband deposited KSh 26.5 million into her bank account in 2016 after he was dismissed. She further said she gave him the ATM card, cheque book, and PIN, and that he later used the account to buy an apartment in Kileleshwa for KSh 21.5 million in 2018, before buying a car and handling other personal expenses. She claimed she had not operated that account since then.
Mrs Waweru also addressed the breakdown of the marriage, saying the relationship deteriorated when Waweru was between jobs and that matters worsened after an alleged assault in November 2025, which led to them sleeping separately and later living apart. She added that the family briefly reunited when one of their sons was sick and Waweru donated a kidney, but she claimed he later demanded KSh 1.8 million for the act. According to the report, Waweru has filed four cases against her, including divorce, registration of her company, maintenance, and matrimonial property.
The dispute has now become a wider family and property battle, with both sides presenting sharply different versions of how their life, assets, and financial struggles were handled over the years. Mrs Waweru says she wants the truth to come out, especially for the sake of their children.
