After steering the Kenya Navy for the last two years, the curtains could be about to fall on the stellar military career of Major General Paul Otieno.

Major General Otieno succeeded Major General Thomas Ng’ang’a Njoroge as Kenya Navy commander in May 2024 in the mini- KDF appointments that followed the death of the then Chief of Defence Forces General Francis Omondi Ogolla.

Prior to his appointment as the Kenya Navy commander, Maj Gen Otieno served as the director, Kenya Shipyards Limited.

For the man who has been in the military since 1987, Maj Gen Otieno has already surpassed the retirement age for officers of his rank.

According to the Tonje Rules, a Major General is supposed retire at 59 years.

Major General Otieno’s profile at the Ministry of Defence indicates that he was born in May 1965. This means that he is now 60 years and will be turning 61 in May 2026.

In the 2025 KDF promotions and appointments by President William Ruto, Maj Gen Otieno was not affected by the changes. What does future hold for him in 2026?

With the 2027 general election around the corner, President Ruto may opt for early transition in the Kenya Navy top command. And just like that, the veteran General may finally bow out after 38 years in KDF.
