He was a heartbeat away from being appointed as Director General of the Directorate of Criminals Investigations in 2022 before Mohamed Amin was picked for the position.

But a month later after losing that golden opportunity to succeed George Kinoti as DCI boss, Munga Nyale was appointed as director of police reforms.

The long serving cop was until late last year principal assistant to the Inspector General of Police before being moved to his current position.

In the rank of Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police, Nyale is considered one of the favourites to succeed Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Kenya police service wing, Edward Njoroge Mbugua.

Mbugua is expected to leave office later this year having attained the retirement age. He has held the position since 2018 when he was appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Nyale, the current chairman of the Kenya Police FC, is a seasoned cop who has been in the service for over three decades.

In a stellar career in the security sector, Nyale rose to fame when he was appointed as Flying Squad Commander. He would later be moved to head the Anti-Terror Police Unit ( ATPU).

With President William Ruto making changes to the security sector to align the crucial department with the Kenya Kwanza manifesto, the appointment of Japheth Koome as IG was just the starting point of the radical changes at Vigilance House.

As for Munga Nyale, it is fingers crossed. His light may end up shinning even much brighter over the coming months.
