Campaigns for the UDA party nominations in Emurua Dikirr constituency, left vacant following the death of Ex-MP Johana Ng’eno, have entered a crucial phase. The contest has seen a significant shift after the late MP’s widow, Naiyanoi Ng’eno, withdrew from the race citing personal reasons.

Ms. Ng’eno, who had received family support two weeks prior and was viewed as a leading candidate, decided to withdraw after discussions with her family.

A representative for the family, David Ngetich, mentioned that Naiyanoi is still mourning the loss of her husband, and the family chose to relieve her from the pressures of the campaign.

Her decision to step back has sparked a shift in political alliances among the prominent supporters of the late MP.

On Saturday, associates of Johana Ng’eno gathered and reached a consensus to endorse Bernard Ngeno, who was a personal assistant to the late MP, as the party’s candidate.

This decision strengthens Ngeno’s position as a significant contender in the upcoming nominations.Anthony Mwaura, the chairman of the UDA National Elections Board (NEB), reassured both candidates and residents that the nomination process will be fair and transparent.

Meanwhile, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has scheduled the by-election for May 14.

The constituency comprises 44,447 registered voters across 94 polling stations, with the election expected to incur costs of Sh59 million.

As the nominations approach their conclusion, attention is now on how candidates will connect with voters and build support leading up to the official UDA candidate selection.

The backing of Bernard Ngeno could play a crucial role in the party’s chances of keeping the seat once held by Johana Ng’eno.
