Many people dream of moving from Africa to the United States in search of better opportunities. However, George and McKenzie Limiri made the opposite choice. Speaking with Lynn Ngugi, the couple shared why they left their comfortable life in the US and settled in a village in Meru, believing that Kenya’s future can be transformed from the grassroots.
George, who is from Meru, and his American wife, McKenzie, relocated with their children in 2022. They described the move as a life-changing decision made without keeping a backup plan. Their goal was to raise their family in a close-knit community while creating opportunities for local people.
One of their biggest projects is Limiris Coffee. Instead of only growing coffee beans, they process, roast, package, and market the final product themselves. They believe Kenya can earn more by adding value to its products rather than exporting raw materials. They also encourage Kenyans to support locally made products and strengthen the country’s economy.
McKenzie admitted that her view of Africa had once been shaped by negative stereotypes. After settling in Kenya, she discovered a different reality filled with opportunity, talent, and untapped potential. Together with George, they now inspire others to rethink the belief that success only exists abroad.
The couple also encourages young people to start small businesses instead of waiting for government jobs. They believe entrepreneurship creates employment and drives lasting economic growth.
Beyond business, George and McKenzie say village life has given their family peace, stronger relationships, and a healthier lifestyle. They hope their journey will inspire more Kenyans, including those in the diaspora, to invest back home and support the vision of “Buy Kenya, Build Kenya.”
