Political activist Morara Kebaso has claimed that government-aligned groups funded a large online smear campaign to ruin his reputation.
In a message posted on X on Friday, November 28, 2025, Kebaso said the attacks began after his civic-education series Vampire Diaries started exposing suspected misuse of public funds.
“When the government saw the impact of the Vampire Diaries in exposing theft of public money, they hired thousands of my fellow youth as bloggers to destroy my reputation,” he wrote.
“My weakest point of attack was the fundraising for fuel,” he added.
Kebaso said the online trolling pushed him into a dark emotional place.
“I was trolled to depression. A man who had worked hard all his life for his property was painted a conman, a beggar and a swindler,” he said.
“I had to leave my family WhatsApp group. I stopped going to church because I felt the world saw me as a fraud,” he added.
He said what hurt the most was feeling abandoned by people who once believed in his work.
“And the most heartbreaking thing is that you believed them,” he told his followers. “I expected you to defend me so that you form a protective curtain as I continue with the work. But you did not. You agreed with them.”
Kebaso said he refunded anyone who asked for reimbursement and insisted that all contributions were used only for civic activities.
“Some of you say hata William Ruto hutusiwa kila siku na kuitwa mwizi. Well, in his case, it’s true, so why should he care?” he wrote.
“If I make 3 billion daily from theft, would I be offended to be called a thief? It only pains when it is false,” he added.
He said his intentions had always been honest.
“I have a heart that cares, not a heart of stone like the politicians you vote for,” he said.
“But with time, soft hearts harden and those who care stop caring. That is how promising transformational leaders become violent and corrupt,” he added.
Over the past year, Kebaso has repeatedly warned about Kenya’s toxic online climate, saying young activists are quickly targeted while powerful figures face little criticism.
In July 2025, he said he was devastated after being labelled a conman by people who once supported him.
He described losing sleep, appetite, and peace of mind because of the constant abuse.
Kebaso said the harassment crushed his morale and forced him to step away from active politics, adding that his reputation had been “dragged through the sewer line.”
