Kenya’s entertainment industry is in mourning following the sudden death of comedian KK Mwenyewe, whose real name was Zachariah Kariuki. Mwenyewe, known for his viral political impersonations, especially of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, died on Monday night at Kiambu Level 4 Hospital after a brief illness.

News of his death was confirmed by his longtime collaborator and fellow comedian, Kafengo. “Rest in peace brother, you will forever be in our hearts,” Kafengo shared in an emotional tribute, also praying for strength for the family and friends left behind.

KK Mwenyewe shot to fame in 2022 through his sharp, satirical takes that captured the public’s attention during the early days of the Kenya Kwanza government. His skits, often shared widely on social media, showcased his talent for mimicking Gachagua’s distinctive style, making him a household name.

Despite his rising popularity and public hope that his work would be recognized by the leaders he often portrayed, Kariuki revealed in a past interview with Jeff Kuria that such recognition never materialized.

The news of his passing has sparked an outpouring of grief across the country. Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah mourned KK as a fearless and gifted comedian whose humor transcended entertainment.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as Mr. KK Mwenyewe,” Omtatah stated. “Through satire and art, he courageously held a mirror to society, not to divide but to educate and unite.”

Describing him as more than just a comedian, Omtatah called KK a “cultural commentator and brave young patriot.”

As tributes continue to pour in, many remember KK Mwenyewe not only for his laughter but also for his boldness in speaking truth through comedy. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
