Concerns over the safety of teachers working in volatile areas have intensified following a deadly attack in Hulugho Sub-County, Garissa, where a nonlocal educator was shot and killed by armed assailants.

According to reports, suspected militant gunmen invaded a housing compound occupied by teachers during the night. Investigators learned that the attackers first entered the home of a female teacher before dawn, where they allegedly interrogated her and forced her to reveal where the male teachers were staying.

The information reportedly guided them to the residence of one male teacher who attempted to run for safety but was gunned down before he could escape. It later emerged that he had previously survived threats and had repeatedly requested to be moved to another station due to ongoing security concerns.

Despite shared intelligence and caution among staff members, the attackers managed to strike while he was at home. Colleagues noted that during tense periods, male teachers often spent nights at police posts or administrative centers for protection.

The latest tragedy has heightened fear among education workers, many of whom are now asking to be transferred immediately. Family members said the slain teacher was the main source of income and had been planning to relocate with his young family to a safer place.

Unions and community leaders are pressing the Teachers Service Commission to act swiftly by relocating nonlocal staff and hiring more locals. Meanwhile, security agencies have begun investigations and stepped up patrols, as education stakeholders warn that delays could expose more lives to danger.
