A painful silence hangs over Rugaita village and the Ng’araria Girls High School community after the death of a teacher whose final journey ended in tragedy.

Benjamin Kinuthia Karehu, a teacher at Ng’araria Girls High School in Kandara, Murang’a County, was found dead days after he went missing. His body was later recovered from River Ndarugo near Witeithie in Juja Sub-county.

According to his family, Mr. Karehu travelled on Friday night at about 9:00 pm to visit his parents at their rural home in Rugaita village, Kiunyu, Kihumbuini area of Gatanga. He was accompanied by his wife, and the trip was meant to be a simple family visit.

When they arrived at the gate, Mr. Karehu stepped out of the car to open it. That is when things suddenly took a dark turn. Another vehicle reportedly appeared from behind, and unknown people forcefully seized the couple and drove off at high speed. Mr. Karehu’s car was left parked outside his parents’ gate.

Moments later, his wife was released by the attackers under unclear circumstances. She returned home safely, but Mr. Karehu was nowhere to be seen. The family quickly reported the incident to the police, hoping he would be found alive.

Days later, those hopes were crushed. His lifeless body was discovered dumped in River Ndarugo, many kilometres away from where he was last seen.

The news has deeply shaken his family, friends, villagers, and colleagues. At Ng’araria Girls High School, students and staff remember him as a calm, dedicated teacher who cared deeply about his work and his learners.

Residents of Rugaita village and members of the school community are now calling on the police to speed up investigations and arrest those responsible. They say justice must be done, not only for the family, but for the safety of the wider community.

As tributes continue to pour in, many describe Mr. Karehu’s death as a heavy loss to education and to the nation.

He will be remembered for the lives he touched. May he rest in peace.
