The quiet town of Mokowe in Lamu is reeling from the shocking death of Sheila Mokaya, a 32-year-old teacher and mother of two, who was gunned down alongside her young daughter by a GSU officer in a suspected love-fuelled murder-suicide.
Sheila, a junior secondary school teacher at Mkunguni Comprehensive School, had recently returned to work after the holidays, unaware that her life was hurtling toward a tragic end.
Moses and SheilaPolice say she was killed by Moses Makira Ayoga, a 31-year-old GSU officer stationed in Mokowe, with whom she had been romantically involved for months.
Family sources revealed that Sheila had hinted at plans to settle down with Makira and even spoke of introducing him to her family in December.
Neighbours revealed that Sheila had also planned to reunite with her estranged husband before her boyfriend killed her by shooting.
Sheila had left that marriage years ago and was focused on building a better future for her children and siblings.
In her church community, Sheila was celebrated for her devotion and generosity, recently donating dozens of chairs to Mokowe SDA Church.
Those who knew the couple are struggling to reconcile the tragic incident with the religious and composed image they both projected.
As investigations continue, Sheila’s grieving family is calling for justice and support to continue the dreams she left behind.
Her death has raised painful questions about love, control, and the unseen dangers that can hide behind a uniform.
