A tense political moment unfolded in Murang’a County during the burial ceremony of the mother of Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, as several senior leaders attended the solemn event. Among those present were Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria. What was meant to be a respectful farewell briefly turned into a scene of open confrontation.

The ceremony drew a large crowd of residents, local leaders, and supporters who came to stand with the Gakuya family in their time of loss. The mood was largely calm and reflective, with messages of unity, comfort, and condolence dominating the proceedings. Leaders took turns addressing mourners, urging Kenyans to remain respectful and to value togetherness, especially during moments of grief.

However, tensions rose when a Member of the County Assembly from Murang’a openly confronted Moses Kuria in front of the gathering. The MCA strongly criticised Kuria, accusing him of disrespecting the people of the region and failing to represent their interests fairly at the national level. The exchange caught the attention of mourners and quickly became the main talking point of the day.

Security personnel and fellow leaders moved in to calm the situation before it could escalate further. The incident, though brief, reflected the deep political divisions that continue to shape national discourse, even during non-political events. Some leaders later appealed for restraint, reminding politicians that funerals should remain spaces of dignity and compassion rather than platforms for confrontation.

Despite the interruption, the ceremony proceeded to its conclusion, with the family receiving messages of support from leaders across the political divide. Many attendees expressed disappointment that political disagreements surfaced at such a sensitive moment, while others viewed it as a sign of the heightened emotions and unresolved tensions within the country’s leadership
