Kindiki and Ruto

A recent statement by President William Ruto has caused a strong reaction online, especially among members of the Luo community. While speaking to his supporters, the President said, “Nyinyi ndo mlinipigia kura, mnafikiria naeza waacha niendee wale wapumbavu?” This loosely translates to, “You are the ones who voted for me, do you think I can leave you and go to those fools?”

Many people believe that the word “wapumbavu” (fools) was directed at the Luo community, who mostly did not vote for him in the last election. This has angered many Luos, who took to social media to express their disappointment and demand an apology.

On platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, hashtags like #RespectLuos and #RutoMustApologize have been trending. Some users said the President’s words were divisive and disrespectful. Others reminded him that he is the leader of all Kenyans, not just those who voted for him.

Leaders from the Luo community also spoke out. They said such language can increase tribal tensions and hurt national unity. They urged the President to be more careful with his words.

However, some of Ruto’s supporters defended him. They claimed his words were taken out of context and that he was simply showing loyalty to his supporters.

This incident has once again opened up the debate about tribalism in Kenyan politics. Many Kenyans are now calling for leaders to promote peace, respect, and unity across all communities.
