One Tam

A group of popular Mt Kenya musicians and some well-known pastors have today joined the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party. This move has sparked mixed reactions from residents across the region, especially on social media.

Photos posted just a few minutes ago by several Mt Kenya leaders show artists such as Samidoh, Sammy Irungu, Martin Janet, and Ngaruiya Junior among others shaking hands with Deputy President Kindiki. The pictures have quickly gone viral. Some residents are now expressing strong emotions online.

Many Facebook users especially from the Mt Kenya region, have flooded Betty Maina’s comments section with angry messages. They feel betrayed by the artists and they are accusing them of abandoning their fans to side with politicians. Some have even referred to the musicians as “wantam” – a slang term for people who easily switch sides or follow fame and money.

“Their music blessed us, but now they are being used to push political agendas. This won’t help Ruto win our votes again,” one user commented. Others argued that singers and entertainers should not be involved in political decisions, especially those that affect the entire community.

Despite the criticism, the leaders who shared the photos praised the move, saying it shows growing support for President William Ruto’s government from the Mt Kenya region.

However, it is clear that not all residents are happy with this development. Some feel that the involvement of artists and pastors in politics may divide the community further ahead of the 2027 general elections.
