Residents of Section 9 estate in Thika were left in shock and panic after a young woman was spotted dangling from the fourth-floor balcony of an apartment in what appeared to be a suicide attempt.

Videos circulating online show the woman, barefoot and visibly distressed, hanging onto the metal railing with trembling arms as neighbors screamed and pleaded with her not to jump. Eyewitnesses say the woman had earlier locked herself in the house before emerging onto the balcony, crying uncontrollably.

“She kept saying life was too much. People tried to talk her down from below, and others ran upstairs to break into the apartment,” said a neighbor who witnessed the incident.

Brave residents managed to reach her just in time, pulling her back into the house as the crowd below cheered and clapped in relief. St. John Ambulance later arrived at the scene and confirmed that the woman was physically unharmed but appeared to be suffering from extreme emotional distress. She was taken to Thika Level 5 Hospital for counseling and further assessment.

The incident has once again raised concerns over rising mental health struggles among Kenyan youth, especially in urban areas where joblessness, pressure, and isolation are on the rise.

Mental health advocates are now calling on the government to increase funding for crisis hotlines, therapy access, and community outreach programs. “People are breaking inside, and no one is noticing until it’s almost too late,” said a counselor from a local NGO.
