An angry group of Kenyans challenged a City Council inspector who was allegedly seeking a bribe from a matatu driver in Nairobi, resulting in a spectacular altercation that went viral.

The episode, which was caught on camera, has spurred a contentious national discussion about corruption and the public’s mounting annoyance with dishonest public servants.

The cop and the driver are shown arguing angrily over an alleged unpaid bribe in the now-viral video. One of the passengers cynically yells, “Is that money from your mother?” which instantly resonates with millions of Kenyans on the internet, escalating the altercation.

Since then, the comment has gained popularity on social media as a rallying cry for the people’s ire at the long-standing corruption in Kenya’s public sector.

The driver and passengers were commended by thousands of users on TikTok and X (previously Twitter) for defying the police, seeing their actions as an example of a new surge of civic bravery among regular people.

One user commented, “This is the Kenya we want — where people say no to corruption without fear.”

Although the Nairobi City Council has not yet released a formal statement about the event, the public’s outrage is growing, with many demanding that the officer be disciplined and that local law enforcement agencies undergo more extensive anti-corruption reforms.

The frank humour in the viral video has made many chuckle, but it also highlights a more serious reality: Kenyans are becoming less tolerant of corruption, regardless of the perpetrator.
