The push for opposition unity has gained momentum, with discussions now shifting to Malava Constituency in Kakamega County ahead of the upcoming by-election.

Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) Secretary-General Eseli Simiyu confirmed that negotiations are underway to present a single opposition candidate. He said the strategy mirrors the agreement reached in Mbeere North where parties rallied behind one flagbearer.

Dr. Simiyu revealed that his party has fronted Seth Panyako as its preferred candidate but consultations remain ongoing to avoid splitting opposition votes. He stressed that the decision would be guided by popularity and ground support.

“We do not want to field multiple candidates only for United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to benefit from our divisions. Our plan is to agree on who stands the best chance of winning,” Simiyu explained.

The talks come as the Democratic Congress Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, intensifies campaigns for its candidate Edgar Busiega. The party has been holding grassroots rallies across Malava to consolidate its support base.

Political observers note that opposition unity could significantly shape the outcome of the by-election. Malava has previously swung between parties, making it a critical battleground in Kakamega politics.

Sources indicate that party leaders are keen to avoid a repeat of past by-elections where disunity cost the opposition crucial seats. The Malava race is therefore viewed as a litmus test for broader collaboration ahead of 2027.

While UDA is yet to formally unveil its candidate, the ruling party is expected to mount a strong campaign in the constituency. The opposition is banking on joint efforts to counter UDA’s influence and secure victory.

Stakeholders believe the decision on a single opposition candidate will be announced in the coming days once consultations are finalized. For now, campaigns continue as parties weigh the best strategy to wrestle control of Malava.
