UK politician with Kenyan roots Rishi Sunak is set to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK).
The candidate was announced as the winner of the Tory leadership contest on 24 October 1922 by Graham Brady, chairman of the caucus.
The new leader of the Conservative Party’s majority party will succeed Liz Truss as Prime Minister and occupy 10 Downing Street in London.
Brady said: “As the returning officer for the leadership election, I can confirm that we have one legitimate candidate and Rishi Sunak has been elected leader of the Conservative Party.”
His victory came after Penny Mordaunt withdrew from the race. Penny congratulated Rishi on his win and said he would support him.
“As a result, we have elected our next Prime Minister. The decision is a historic decision and once again shows the diversity and talent of our party. Rishi has my full support.”
“We all have a duty to the country, to each other and to unite and work together for the good of the nation,” Mordaunt said.
Sunak is the son of a Chief Medical Officer father and a pharmacist mother, born in Kenya and Tanzania respectively.
His parents moved to England, where he was educated by the incoming Prime Minister. He attended Winchester College, an all-boys boarding school, then Lincoln College, Oxford.
At the age of 41, he received first class honors in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, after which he attended Stanford University and received an MBA.
His first political victory was in 2015 when he won the Yorkshire parliamentary race for the Conservative Party.
Sunak was re-elected in the 2017 general election. In 2019, he supported Boris Johnson in his bid to become leader of the Conservative Party and later Prime Minister.
He also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and Chancellor of the Exchequer.
