Former Defence Cabinet Secretary Dr Monica Juma is part of President William Ruto’s high -powered delegation for the USA tour.
Dr Juma, a highly respected security expert and diplomat, was one of the most powerful women in former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s adminstration.
She first served as foreign affairs Principal Secretary before being moved to the ministry of interior and coordination of national government in same capacity.
In 2018, she was appointed as foreign affairs Cabinet Secretary to succeed Amina Mohamed who was moved to the education docket.
She would later be appointed as defence CS. In the process, she became the second woman in the history of Kenya to serve in the powerful ministry after Raychelle Omamo.
By the time Uhuru was leaving government after the 2022 general election, Dr Juma was Energy CS.
In 2022, when Ruto named his cabinet, Dr Juma was appointed as the President’s security advisor. Z few months later, she was given additional roles after being named as the secretary to the National Security Advisory Council, which is the top security decision making organ in the country.
With the Haiti talks expected to feature in Biden- Ruto talks, the presence of Dr Juma in the President’s entourage is not accidental.
