Ugandan human rights activist Agatha Atuhaire has come forward with shocking allegations of abuse while in the custody of Tanzanian authorities. According to her statement, she was arrested under unclear circumstances and subjected to degrading and inhumane treatment during her detention.
Atuhaire, who is well known for her advocacy on issues of justice, governance, and transparency, revealed that she was forced to strip naked by Tanzanian officials. What followed, she claims, was a horrific act of sexual assault. Her voice shaken, Atuhaire described the experience as one of the most traumatic moments of her life. “I was humiliated and violated in a way no one should ever experience,” she said.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the region. Human rights organizations and fellow activists have condemned the reported abuse, calling for an immediate and transparent investigation. Many are demanding that those responsible be held accountable under international human rights law.
Agatha Atuhaire’s case has highlighted growing concerns over the safety of activists in East Africa, particularly those who speak out against government injustices. The alleged abuse also raises questions about the treatment of foreign nationals by security agencies in Tanzania.
Despite the trauma, Atuhaire remains determined to seek justice. “Speaking out is the first step in breaking the silence and holding abusers accountable,” she said. Her courage in sharing her experience has inspired a wave of solidarity among civil society groups and individuals across the continent.
As of now, Tanzanian authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the allegations. However, pressure is mounting for a full investigation and for regional bodies to intervene to ensure justice is served.
