In surprising political development ahead of the Malava by-election, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale of the UDA Party has publicly endorsed DAP Kenya’s candidate, Seth Panyako.
This endorsement comes despite the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) fielding its own candidate, MP Ndakwa, to succeed the late Malulu Injendi, who passed away recently.
The Malava by-election has attracted significant attention as political parties jockey for control in this strategic Kakamega County seat.
Traditionally a UDA stronghold, the party had expected to maintain its influence through Ndakwa, a well-known figure with deep roots in the community.
However, Khalwale’s backing of Panyako, who represents the smaller but growing Democratic Action Party (DAP) Kenya, has sent shockwaves through local political circles.
Khalwale, a seasoned politician with a strong grassroots following, stated that his support for Panyako stems from the candidate’s commitment to development and service delivery in Malava.
According to Khalwale, Panyako’s vision aligns more closely with the aspirations of the Malava people, especially in areas like education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
This endorsement also highlights a possible rift within the UDA ranks in Kakamega, as some members appear divided on who is best suited to represent their interests in Parliament.
DAP Kenya, under the leadership of David Ochieng, has been gaining momentum in western Kenya, challenging the dominance of larger parties.
The party’s ability to attract influential endorsements like Khalwale’s could prove pivotal in the tightly contested by-election.
As the campaign heats up, all eyes will be on Malava to see whether Khalwale’s endorsement will shift voter sentiment in favor of Panyako or if UDA’s Ndakwa will maintain the party’s hold on the seat.
The by-election is shaping up to be a key battleground in the evolving political landscape of Kakamega County.
