Two Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) cadets have been handpicked to join two of the world’s most prestigious military academies in the United States.

Moses Kipsang will train at the United States Air Force Academy, while Philemon Munjuri will head to the United States Naval Academy an extraordinary honour that places them among an elite global cohort of future military leaders.

The announcement was made during a celebratory event held in Nairobi on Wednesday, hosted by the KDF in partnership with the United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM).

USAFRICOM Commander General Michael Langley personally lauded the cadets’ achievement, saying, “I want to take this early opportunity to wish them the best as they begin their training and stay in the U.S. The United States stands firmly in support.”

Brigadier Peter Kimondiu, Deputy Commandant of the Kenya Military Academy, praised the duo’s dedication and perseverance.

“It is a great honour to see our cadets accepted into such prestigious institutions. This is proof that discipline and hard work open international doors.”

He encouraged them to rise to future challenges and to carry Kenya’s flag high abroad.

This milestone follows growing security ties between the two nations. In January 2024, the U.S. donated over Ksh220 million worth of advanced military protective gear to Kenya, a gift AFRICOM described as critical to enhancing regional security and the KDF’s peacekeeping capabilities.
