A man from Homa Bay has become an unexpected online star after a hilarious interview during the Madaraka Day celebrations at Raila Odinga Stadium.
George Otieno Omollo, who identified himself as being from Kado Primary School, caught the attention of Kenyans with his unique way of expressing excitement about seeing President William Ruto.
Speaking to a local media outlet, Otieno shared that he arrived at the stadium as early as 1:00 a.m. just to secure a spot to witness the president.
“Nilifika hapa saa saba usiku,” he said.
“Sikuwa nimekunywa chai, watu walikuwa wengi sana, hakuna hata nafasi ya kupita.”
Otieno was full of praise for President Ruto, whom he said has done a lot for the country.
His message, though delivered in broken Kiswahili, was full of emotion and left many Kenyans laughing and cheering him on.
“Nataka kuona President William Ruto. Amefanya kazi mkubwa sana. Tumeshukuru… tena tume asanti,” he added with confidence.
His pronunciation and accent sparked humorous reactions across social media.
While some poked fun at his Kiswahili, others praised his honesty and bravery for speaking from the heart without fear.
One social media user joked, “This man and Kiswahili are not friends, but he said the truth.”
Another said, “That’s how we show support – with courage, even when the language fails us.”
The event itself was colorful, with the stadium packed to capacity.
Locals had camped there the night before to ensure they didn’t miss the celebration.
President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga attended the event and were even seen dancing to Ohangla music alongside guests like Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
Otieno’s short interview became one of the most shared moments from the event.
His passion, despite the language barrier, stood out.
“He should have done the interview in English,” one viewer laughed.
“But that’s our brother, and we’re proud of him!”
As the celebrations came to an end, it was clear that Otieno’s cheerful spirit and unforgettable phrase “Tume Asanti!” had won the hearts of many Kenyans.
