The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has issued a stern warning to public officers who fail to declare their assets truthfully, cautioning that those found hiding or underreporting wealth will face prosecution and asset recovery proceedings.
EACC Chief Executive Officer Mr. Twalib Mbarak Mohamud made the announcement during a media briefing in Nairobi, emphasizing that the commission will no longer tolerate dishonesty in the declaration of wealth by state and public officers.
“If we realize that you have not declared some of your assets, we will sue you for that and recover the assets that you have failed to declare,” he warned.
Mr. Mohamud revealed that the law requires all public officers — from senior government officials to junior clerks — to submit complete and accurate declarations of their assets, liabilities, and income every two years.
The move, he said, is not a mere formality but a vital tool in tracking unexplained wealth and curbing corruption within government institutions.
Analysts view this as part of the commission’s renewed effort to restore integrity in public administration and strengthen public trust in governance.
With the 2027 General Election drawing nearer, the EACC appears keen to send a clear message — that public office is not a platform for personal enrichment but a position of trust.
In recent years, Kenya has witnessed a surge in cases of unexplained wealth among senior public officials, with the EACC uncovering hidden assets running into billions of shillings.
The commission has vowed to intensify lifestyle audits and collaborate with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Financial Reporting Centre (FRC), and other agencies to expose illicit enrichment.
Mr. Mohamud’s declaration marks a bold step toward cleaning the public sector and reinforcing accountability. His warning was crystal clear: those who built empires on lies will not escape justice.
In a nation weary of corruption scandals, the EACC’s latest move could finally mark the beginning of a long-overdue reckoning.
