A former Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier has revealed the traumatic experiences he endured after being deceived into fighting on the Russian frontline. Speaking to the press, he recounted how he and two other Kenyans were promised legitimate work opportunities abroad, only to find themselves thrust into a deadly conflict.
“I have slept next to lifeless bodies,” the ex-serviceman said, describing the horrors he witnessed daily. The reality of war was far beyond what he had imagined. He recalled seeing fellow soldiers fall in battle, and the constant fear of death became a permanent companion. Though he survived and returned home, the psychological scars remain vivid. He continues to experience nightmares, flashbacks, and anxiety triggered by reminders of the battlefield.
Mental health experts note that individuals exposed to such extreme situations are at high risk of developing post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and other long-term psychological effects. The former soldier’s story highlights the dangers of deceptive recruitment practices that exploit young people seeking employment or adventure abroad.
He hopes his testimony will serve as a warning to others and prompt authorities to implement stricter measures against illegal recruitment. “No one should go through what I went through,” he said, urging support systems for victims who survive such life threatening situations.
His harrowing experience is a stark reminder of the hidden dangers that some face when promises of opportunity turn into a fight for survival. As he continues his journey toward healing, he emphasizes the need for awareness, vigilance, and compassion for those affected by such traumatic experiences.
