A tragic incident occurred along the Kisumu-Busia highway, leaving one police officer dead after being hit by a speeding truck.
The accident happened at Asikote area in Luanda, Vihiga County, where officers had mounted a lawful roadblock to monitor traffic.
The deceased, Constable Michaels Yeko, was attached to Embali Police Station. He was on duty conducting the roadblock operation under the supervision of a Sergeant.
According to police reports, the roadblock had been properly set up with visible stop signs placed on both sides of the highway.
At around the early morning hours, a Mercedes Benz Actros truck approached from the Kisumu direction heading towards Busia. The driver, identified as Farah Adan, was flagged down by Constable Yeko.
However, he allegedly ignored the signal, sped through the barrier, and violently knocked down the officer. Yeko sustained severe injuries to his back and abdomen and died instantly at the scene.
Police officers quickly responded, securing and marking the area for further investigation. The body of the fallen officer was moved to the mortuary for preservation, awaiting a postmortem examination.
The truck was detained at the local police station for inspection, while the driver was arrested and placed in custody pending arraignment in court.
