A tragic air disaster has struck after a Russian Ilyushin Il-76 military aircraft crashed near Osman Digna Airbase in Port Sudan on Monday, December 9. All crew members on board died instantly, adding more pressure on President Vladimir Putin as Russia’s involvement in Sudan continues to draw global attention.
Reports indicate the aircraft was delivering food aid in support of the Sudanese Armed Forces when it went down during its landing approach. Russian officials blamed a technical malfunction but did not give specific details. They dismissed the possibility of hostile fire, stating that no enemy activity was reported near the airbase.
Witnesses said the plane was flying unusually low before a huge fireball lit up the sky. Thick smoke followed as emergency teams rushed to the scene but were unable to save anyone due to the intense flames that destroyed the aircraft. The SAF has not yet released the identities of the victims.
The crash comes as Sudan faces a deep humanitarian crisis caused by the ongoing conflict between the SAF and the RSF, which has displaced millions and destroyed essential services. Russia has been offering logistical support, including deploying the Il-76 for relief operations.
However, the tragedy has renewed criticism of Russia’s role in Sudan. Many countries and rights groups claim Moscow’s military involvement has worsened instability. The SAF has launched an investigation, urging the public to avoid speculation as questions continue about Russia’s long-term ambitions in the region.
