A tragic incident occurred at Bunangeni Secondary School in Bokoli, Bungoma County, where a 16‑year‑old student died after being struck by a javelin during a school sports activity.

The accident happened while students were engaged in a javelin contest on the school grounds. Witnesses said one participant threw the javelin, which fatally hit the victim on the head.

 

Teachers and classmates rushed to assist, and the boy was swiftly taken to a nearby hospital. Despite medical intervention, he was declared dead during treatment.

Police confirmed the incident and stated that the body was later transferred to the mortuary. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the precise cause of death.

Education and security officials plan to investigate how the accident occurred and whether safety measures were observed during the sports session.

 

The event has left the school community in grief. Students remembered the boy as cheerful and hardworking, while teachers mourned the sudden loss of a promising learner.

Parents have voiced concerns about the safety of athletics in schools, urging stricter supervision and improved training.

Sports experts stress that although javelin is a recognized discipline, it demands careful handling and strict safety protocols. They highlight the need for proper spacing, protective equipment, and trained oversight whenever such activities are organized.
