Samuel Kamau Macharia, more commonly known as SK Macharia, stands out as one of Kenya’s most influential entrepreneurs. The founder of Royal Media Services (RMS), Macharia started his media empire after selling Madhupaper, his tissue manufacturing company, for a notable Ksh 250 million in 1989.

Initially, RMS made waves with its flagship stations, Citizen TV and Radio Citizen, quickly becoming household names across Kenya. However, Macharia’s vision didn’t stop there. He ventured into vernacular radio, a move that greatly expanded his influence and connected deeply with Kenya’s diverse cultural landscape.

Ramogi FM

As Kenya’s premier Dholuo radio station, Ramogi FM holds the distinction of being the first audio-visual station in East and Central Africa. With its widespread reach both on terrestrial transmission and online, the station captures the essence of the Luo community through its slogan, Kar Chuny Jaluo, meaning “the desires of the Luo.”

Inooro FM

Dominating the airwaves in Central Kenya, Inooro FM is renowned for its engaging content that resonates with the Kikuyu-speaking audience. Its mix of traditional Kikuyu music and modern programming has made it a staple in many households, particularly those focused on farming and innovation.

Musyi FM

Musyi FM, broadcasting since 2005, has become the leading Kamba language station in Kenya. The name “Musyi,” translating to “home,” reflects the station’s mission to keep the Kamba community informed and united, with its strong presence in Nairobi, Machakos, and the larger Lower Eastern region.

Chamgei FM

Targeting the Kalenjin community, Chamgei FM serves the interests of Kenya’s diverse Kalenjin sub-tribes, offering a mix of cultural programming, news, and educational content that resonates deeply with the community.

From Kimeru’s Muuga FM to the Bukusu-focused Sulwe FM, SK Macharia’s vernacular stations have played a pivotal role in bridging cultural gaps and promoting Kenya’s rich linguistic diversity.
