The fatal accident occurred on February 15, 2026, in the Mwatungo area, leaving the nation in shock.

The officers who died in the crash have been identified as Police Constable (PC) Peter Maina, PC Nicholas Chemase, and PC Kibet Tanui.

The three were among a group of officers from Nguutani Police Station who were involved in the accident while returning from an official operation.

According to reports, the officers had traveled to Kanyonyo in an attempt to arrest a suspect.

However, they did not find the suspect and began their journey back to the station.

At around 2:00 PM, while driving along the Matuu–Mwingi Road, their vehicle developed a mechanical problem.

The vehicle, a Ford Ranger registration number GKB 167Y belonging to Nguutani Police Station, reportedly experienced a sudden mechanical failure when the front left wheel locked.

PC Peter Maina died instantly at the scene due to the impact of the crash.

His colleagues, PC Nicholas Chemase and PC Kibet Tanui, were rushed to Kithyoko Level Three Hospital for treatment.

Sadly, both officers later succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical care.

Two other occupants, PC James Karanja and a civilian passenger identified as Joseph Nzumbi, survived the crash but sustained injuries.

They are currently receiving treatment at Kithyoko Level Three Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

Police officers and investigators visited the scene shortly after the accident.

The area was examined, and the bodies of the deceased officers were taken to Mbaku Mortuary, where post-mortem examinations are expected to be conducted.

The damaged vehicle was towed to Nguutani Police Station for inspection as investigations continue.
