Anselm Kizza Besigye is the son of famous Uganda opposition leader Col. (Rtd.) Dr. Kizza Besigye and Winnie Byanyima, the Executive Director of UNAIDS.
Unlike his father, Anselm has largely stayed away from active politics. He has instead focused on anthropology and social research, with much of his academic work connected to Uganda and East Africa.
His academic journey has attracted attention. Anselm graduated from Harvard University in 2021 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology.
He graduated with distinction, and his senior thesis won the 2021 Thomas Temple Hoopes Prize, one of Harvard’s recognitions for outstanding undergraduate work.
He later continued his studies at the University of Chicago, where he completed a master’s degree in Anthropology in 2023.
But that was not the end. In 2024, Anselm accepted a fully funded PhD opportunity at Columbia University in New York after reportedly turning down fully funded offers from Oxford and the University of Chicago. His research has continued to focus on East Africa, including Uganda and Tanzania.
His mother, Winnie Byanyima, has previously spoken proudly about her son and his academic journey. She has also defended him against online attacks over his appearance and personal life.
Anselm has occasionally spoken about Ugandan affairs on X, especially matters involving his father, but politics does not appear to be his main path.
At a time when many children of famous politicians follow their parents into public life, Anselm has chosen books, research and university life instead.
