Aden Duale’s fate at the Ministry of Defence was sealed after the Kenya Defence Forces top brass reportedly protested against President William Ruto’s decision to reappoint him to the helm of the sensitive docket.

But in a surprise turn of events, on Tuesday, as President Ruto forwarded the list of his cabinet nominees to the National Assembly for vetting, Duale had been swapped with the environment docket nominee Soipan Tuya. But what really transpired before Ruto made the decision to drop his key political lieutenant from the powerful ministry?

It has since emerged that on the day Duale was fired alongside other cabinet secretaries, celebrations erupted at DoD and other military barracks in the country.

Clearly, Duale was not wanted by the KDF top brass to be at the helm of the ministry.

According to the People Daily newspaper, the top KDF Generals had planned to move to court to petition the removal of Duale as the CS Defence had the National Assembly approved his nomination to head the sensitive security docket.

Being his key political associate, Ruto did not drop Duale entirely from the cabinet. Instead, he moved him to the low-key environment docket.

As for Soipan Tuya, she continues to rise in the top country leadership having been entrusted with managing the affairs of the country’s defence.
