Raila Odinga’s final hours in India have drawn attention after his longtime bodyguard, Maurice Ogeta, recalled a moment inside the hospital that left him uneasy.
Ogeta was beside the former Kenyan prime minister on October 15, 2025, when their routine morning walk took a tragic turn. Raila had planned several rounds, but during the second lap he stopped and made a faint sound. Ogeta asked whether his back or leg was hurting, but Raila did not answer before his body gave way.
An ambulance rushed Raila to Devamatha Hospital in Kerala, where medical staff tried to revive him. Ogeta recalled watching doctors perform CPR and later use an electric shock in an effort to save him.
What caught his attention was a Bible, a candle and a piece of cloth that he said he noticed being arranged nearby during the emergency. According to his account in a television interview, he questioned the doctor about what he was seeing.
The memory has stirred discussion because Ogeta was close to Raila during his final moments. He served as the late leader’s trusted security aide and described their relationship as more than work.
However, Ogeta’s observations and concerns are not proof of wrongdoing at the hospital. Reports said Raila arrived without a detectable pulse or blood pressure after suffering cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead that day, aged 80.
The incident sparked reactions online, and many people were left talking about how painful it must have been for Ogeta to witness the emergency and lose a man he regarded as a mentor and father figure. Supporters appeared divided between grief, questions and calls for clarity.
