Mali Safi Jio

In late 2023, Kenyan artist Millicent Jerotich, known professionally as Marakwet Daughter, released a song titled “Mali Safi Chito.”

Uploaded to YouTube on 3 November 2023, the song quickly drew millions of views, over 19 million and counting, thanks to its catchy beat, heartfelt lyrics about beauty and authenticity, and widespread sharing on TikTok and Instagram.

Marakwet had been making music for years without major recognition.

She said that the song came to her head in 2021 after she prayed, and she didn’t release it until recently because she didn’t have money to pay for the production.

But fame on social platforms can be volatile. After Mali Safi Chito blew up, scrutiny arrived with it.

A viral TikTok response video from her, where she addressed negative comments and trolls, quickly circulated, drawing mixed reactions, praise from some, and sharp criticism from others, turning online attention into something more controversial.

The internet audience that once pushed her song up the charts also became a space where criticism and harsh commentary thrived.

She faced heavy criticism after making harsh remarks toward her social media supporters , and giving conflicting personal details in interviews.

She warned Kenyan DJs against playing or uploading her music without her explicit consent.

Later song releases struggled to pass 45,000 views, with some dropping as low as 3,100 views.

Event bookings dropped sharply as she lost the backing of fans and promoters who helped launch her career.
