Photos of the iconic LadyGay lotion, a brand that defined everyday skincare in countless Kenyan households from the 1970s through the early 2000s have recently resurfaced.
What has particularly captured public attention is the woman featured on the lotion’s cover.
New interest around the images has revealed that the elegant face many Kenyans grew up seeing belonged to Zahra Chebet Moi, now widely known as the wife of prominent Kenyan politician Gideon Moi.
At the height of LadyGay’s popularity, Zahra’s image was everywhere on lotion bottles, in magazines, and across print advertisements.
Yet at the time, very few people knew who she was. She was simply a graceful, familiar face associated with a product that sat on dressing tables and bathroom shelves in homes across the country.
For years, LadyGay lotion was more than just a cosmetic product; it was part of daily life. Its branding became so common that its cover model blended seamlessly into the background of Kenyan popular culture.
Today, both the lotion and its former cover star have largely disappeared from the spotlight.
LadyGay is no longer the common thing and Zahra herself has adopted a quiet, reserved lifestyle, focusing on her family and supporting her husband away from public attention.
