Former Kigumo Member of Parliament Jamleck Kamau has announced he is stepping back from active politics, citing “reasons beyond my control” in a Facebook post on Thursday morning.

Kamau, a prominent ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, assured his supporters that he would continue engaging and consulting with them despite the break. “I will continue engaging and consulting you as we move forward,” he wrote, adding that he would “be back soon.”

The announcement comes amid escalating political tensions for Gachagua’s allies following the former Deputy President’s impeachment in October 2024. Kamau has been among the most vocal supporters of Gachagua, having joined his Democracy for Citizens Party in June 2025 after an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid in 2022.

In July 2025, Kamau was involved in a violent incident in Murang’a where his vehicle was allegedly shot at by police. He described the attack as “a blatant case of attempted murder” and said it was a clear message from the government to opposition leaders. The incident highlighted the growing confrontation between Gachagua’s allies and state authorities.

Kamau’s political journey has been marked by significant shifts. After losing the 2022 Murang’a gubernatorial race on a Jubilee ticket backed by President Uhuru Kenyatta, he later admitted making a mistake by not listening to grassroots sentiment.

His subsequent alignment with Gachagua represented a strategic repositioning within Mount Kenya politics.

In his farewell message, Kamau specifically thanked Generation Z supporters and pledged to remain principled. “I will never tire to tell you, stand firm, fair and with principles,” he stated, closing with a blessing for Kenya.

The timing and circumstances of his withdrawal suggest the political costs of opposing the current government may have become untenable for the former lawmaker.
