Tension gripped Githurai on Thursday as chaos erupted during demonstrations as unknown rob protestors and shop centers as police officer watched helplessly during commemoration of June 25, 2024 victims.
The incidents unfolded as hundreds of people gathered in different parts of the country to commemorate young Kenyans who lost their lives during last year’s anti-government demonstrations.
However, in Githurai, what began as a protest event quickly descended into scenes of panic as groups of unidentified individuals allegedly embarked on a looting spree.
Videos circulating online and aired by Citizen TV showed groups of people forcefully snatching valuables from passersby and targeting businesses operating within the area.
Witnesses claimed that some of the victims included journalists who had been covering the demonstrations as well as protesters who had joined the commemorative marches.
The footage captured dramatic scenes as the suspected thieves moved through the crowded streets, causing fear among residents and traders.
Several people were seen running for safety while others desperately tried to protect their belongings from being stolen.
As the situation deteriorated, police officers stationed in the area appeared overwhelmed by the rapidly unfolding events.
According to witnesses, law enforcement officers initially struggled to contain the chaos as the suspects moved through the crowds.
The situation later escalated into a confrontation between police and groups of individuals believed to be involved in the robberies.
Officers moved in to restore order, firing warning shots into the air in an attempt to disperse the crowds and regain control of the area.
