Mribel

A cremation ceremony meant to honor the life of late TikToker Imac Maribel turned emotionally charged in Nyeri after a heated exchange involving prominent online personalities stirred attention among mourners and social media users.

Maribel, who had openly shared her struggles with mental health on social media, died on May 13 after what reports described as a long battle with bipolar disorder. Her passing shocked many followers who had closely followed her journey through personal challenges, including unemployment struggles and social pressure.

During the cremation held at a Hindu facility in Nyeri County, tension reportedly rose when Priscilla wa Imani confronted Kikuyu musician Ngaruiya Junior over his public political remarks, particularly those linked to criticism of political leader Rigathi Gachagua.

Witnesses and circulating video clips showed Priscilla speaking emotionally and firmly, accusing Ngaruiya Junior of being insensitive and questioning his authority to comment on political matters in such a solemn gathering. She also referenced Maribel’s personal struggles, emphasizing the hardships the deceased had faced, including unemployment despite her education.

Her remarks drew mixed reactions from those present. Some mourners appeared supportive, while others felt the exchange was inappropriate for a funeral setting. The incident quickly spilled onto social media, where users debated both the message and the timing of the confrontation.

Maribel’s family had earlier confirmed her wish to be cremated, a decision that also sparked online discussion but was ultimately respected during the final rites. Emotional tributes from her siblings highlighted her kindness, intelligence, and the pain they endured following her passing.

As clips of the confrontation continue to circulate online, the ceremony has become a focal point for broader conversations about grief, mental health awareness, and the intersection of politics and public mourning in Kenya.

The incident has left many Kenyans reflecting on how funerals—traditionally spaces of unity and respect—are increasingly becoming stages for public and political expression.
