Swaleh Sonko has publicly admitted to receiving payments from politicians to mobilize crowds on their behalf, leveraging his strong connections. He revealed that even during the Maandamano protests, he was paid to gather people some armed with clubs to infiltrate demonstrations.

 

In an interview with 2mbili TV, Swaleh, who lives in a self-owned mabati (iron sheet) house in one of Nairobi’s informal settlements, shared that he earns substantial income through crowd mobilization. The highest amount he has received for this work is Ksh. 300,000.

Swaleh described himself as having exceptional mobilization skills and acknowledged that many members of Gen Z dislike him. However, he claimed that the criticism is mostly online, insisting that he remains popular at the grassroots level.

He explained that he is simply using his skills to make a living and has greatly benefited from it. According to him, he’s currently living well and has even purchased a popular new black leather couch.
