Sad emotions were experienced as family, teachers, and students bid their final goodbye to the late Sophie Mwende Wanyaga, a Form Two student at County mixed day secondary school, who lost her life in a tragic road accident on Sunday, 6th July 2025, at Kavingaci River in Machakos County.
According to sources, Sophie died after the motorcycle she was riding on was hit by a speeding vehicle, killing her and the bodaboda rider on the spot. The car reportedly belonged to a former Embu county Deputy Governor, David Kariuki, who currently serves as the Chairperson of NSSF.
After a video showing the heartbreaking moment of the accident went viral, false reports began circulating online, suggesting that the vehicle was part of President William Ruto’s motorcade.
In the video, the car is seen swerving off the road to avoid a stalled vehicle, but it tragically ended up hitting the motorcycle before plunging into the river.

The late Sophie Mwende Wanyaga is set to be laid to rest on Tuesday, 15th July.
