A woman in Nairobi is talking about the last moments of her stepdaughter. The girl’s death has caused anger and restarted the conversation about how kids are disciplined and domestic abuse.
Charlene Nyagweso died after her father, Nelson Omeno, supposedly attacked her. Sheila Odhiambo, her stepmother, was there and is telling her side of the story, calling the day awful and misunderstood. Sheila said that what happened wasn’t supposed to end with Charlene dying.
Sheila says the family was at home when Charlene and her father got into an argument. Omeno was trying to discipline Charlene, like he had before, but things suddenly went wrong.
Sheila insists that no one meant to hurt Charlene and that the result surprised everyone in the house.
“It was just a case of bad luck. He was only trying to discipline her, but she died because of unfortunate events. He didn’t mean for this to occur,” Sheila stated.
Charlene stopped responding, and they tried to get her medical attention, but it was too late. News of her death spread fast, causing anger, sadness, and questions from the public. Many Kenyans are worried about where the line is between discipline and abuse, especially at home.
The public was even more upset when a video of Sheila being interviewed went around online. In the video, she was smiling at times while telling the story, which made people on social media very angry.
Many Kenyans questioned her behavior, saying she seemed insensitive considering how serious the loss was. Others argued that people deal with trauma in different ways and warned against judging her emotional reaction too quickly.
Charlene’s biological mother had split from Omeno after 14 years, but he had custody of Charlene. After Charlene’s death, people are looking closely at that decision, asking authorities to check custody arrangements in similar situations.
The police are still investigating while the family grieves, and the country is paying close attention. As the case develops, Charlene’s death is a terrible reminder of the dangers kids face in private and the need to step in fast when discipline becomes violent.
