Grief and shock have gripped students and staff at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kaptumo Campus following the tragic death of a young nursing student who is reported to have taken her own life.
The student, identified as Rita Chumba, was a 21-year-old second-year nursing trainee.
Reports indicate that she died by suicide just a day before Valentine’s Day celebrations, allegedly after being dumped by her lover.
The heartbreaking incident has left her classmates, lecturers, and family members struggling to come to terms with the loss.
According to information shared by fellow students, Rita had recently gone through a painful breakup. Friends say she appeared deeply hurt and emotionally distressed after the relationship ended. Some of her close associates revealed that she had been unusually quiet and withdrawn in the days leading up to her death. However, many did not imagine that the situation would end in tragedy.
Her body was reportedly discovered in her rented house in Eldoret, sending shockwaves across the campus community.
News of her passing spread quickly among students, many of whom gathered in groups to mourn and comfort one another.
Tears flowed freely as they remembered her as a friendly, hardworking, and determined young woman who had big dreams of becoming a professional nurse.
Lecturers described Rita as a committed student who showed dedication to her studies and clinical practice.
They said she had great potential and a bright future ahead of her in the medical field.
Her sudden death has therefore raised serious concerns about the emotional well-being of students dealing with personal challenges.
