Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and current Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Thursday evening made a joint visit to the residence of former Governor Ann Kananu to offer condolences following the death of her mother. The two leaders, who had earlier held a courtesy meeting at Sakaja’s Riverside Drive office, agreed to stand in solidarity with Kananu during the period of mourning.
The visit was part of a promise they had made during their earlier discussions, where they emphasized the importance of supporting leaders and families during moments of grief.
After the meeting, Sonko and Sakaja travelled together to Kananu’s home, where they joined family members and close friends in offering prayers and emotional support.
The leaders spent time with the bereaved family, comforting them and reflecting on the life of the deceased.
Speaking during the visit, the leaders expressed their sympathy and described the loss as deeply painful, noting that a mother’s role in society is irreplaceable.
They encouraged Kananu and her family to remain strong during this difficult period and assured them of continued support from friends and colleagues. The visit also highlighted a rare show of unity between the two Nairobi leaders, who set aside political differences to stand together in support of a colleague in mourning.
Mike Sonko, who had visited Kananu’s mother in the hospital before her death, revealed that the family was left with huge medical bills, requiring support.
He issued the update after a courtesy call by Governor Johnson Sakaja, where they discussed how Nairobi leaders could rally around their colleague.
The politician’s mother died on May 4. In her tribute, Kananu recognised her late mother as a pillar who stood firm for the family.
