A Kenyan mother has sparked conversation online after sharing her daughter’s Kenya Junior School Education Assessment results. She expressed confusion over the new grading system, posting a screenshot on social media and asking for clarification.

Many parents could relate as the eight-level assessment replaced the traditional marks and grades system.

The KJSEA now uses terms such as Exceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Approaching Expectations, and Below Expectations. Each level contributes points to a cumulative score. In her daughter’s results, there was a mix of Exceeding Expectations and Meeting Expectations. Although the results reflected strong performance, the mother was unsure how to interpret them.

Kenyans quickly responded to help her understand the scores. One user explained that the highest level, Exceeding Expectations, corresponds to around 90 to 100 percent, while Meeting Expectations is about 80 to 89 percent. Another parent walked her through all the levels, noting that once she understood the terminology, she could see her child had performed well.

Other users celebrated the student’s achievements. Some praised her for hard work and dedication, while others predicted she would qualify for extra county schools. A few comments added humor, reminding parents to be proud regardless of the grading system.

This discussion highlights a wider issue for many families who are adjusting to the new assessment method. Parents are seeking guidance to understand their children’s results while still celebrating their achievements. The conversation also shows how social media has become a useful platform for sharing information and offering support.
