The investigation into the suspicious death of teacher Albert Ojwang has taken a dramatic turn after a CCTV technician linked the Nairobi Central Police Station’s Officer Commanding Station (OCS) to a deliberate cover-up attempt.
Kelvin Mutisya Matava, a technician who initially installed the CCTV system at the station, was arrested on Friday in Saika. He is accused of tampering with surveillance footage that could have revealed what happened to Ojwang, who died in police custody on June 8.
Sources close to the probe say Matava confessed to formatting the station’s CCTV hard drives after receiving instructions and a Sh3,000 payment from the OCS, Samson Taalam.
The technician explained that he was contacted early that morning and asked to delete all footage from June 6 and 7.
Since selective deletion wasn’t possible, he was instructed to wipe the entire system and restore it to factory settings.
Matava further revealed that he was asked to dress casually and avoid anything that would identify him as a technician. When he returned to replace the storage drive the next day, he discovered the system had already been tampered with again.
He also claimed that one of the officers involved later handed his number to an official from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), who sought his help in retrieving deleted footage.
The arrest of Matava comes just a day after another police officer was detained over Ojwang’s death.
These revelations add more pressure on authorities to explain the growing inconsistencies and alleged interference with evidence in a case that has triggered national outrage.
