Sauti Sol’s lead man Bien Baraza has come out to fire back at media personality cum comedian MCA Tricky over his recent comment on the state of the Kenyan music industry. The comedian during a recent interview claimed that there was a lot of work that still needed to be done to elevate the status of Kenyan music. According to the comedian, Kenyan music still lagged behind as compared to music from other countries such as Tanzania and Nigeria.
“The problem is not playing Kenyan music 75%. The problem is the consumers. Even if you play it, they are not going to consume it. The issue here is, lets check at the roots of the problem… Kenyan artists saa hii wangekua wana produce music ya Kingereza wangekua washa grow. Wangekua washapata collabo an kina Ruger huko… It is like we are already bored with our Kiswahili. People want to hear something new,” MCA Tricky responded.
Bien while responding to the sentiments made by the comedian claimed that the comedian had left their industry to focus on music. He noted that some of the comedians who were busy calling out Kenyan musicians had not done anything major for themselves. He went ahead to point out that the comedians should use the same advice on themselves.
“Swahili-speaking comedian talking about language barrier. @mwalimchurchill come get your kids and tell them to focus on their shit. All these comedians have now become expert’s on Kenyan music. I’m yet to see any of them do anything ground breaking. Use that advice on yourself,” Bien’s response read.
The past few weeks have seen different stakeholders come out to give their opinions on the state of the Kenyan music industry.
